Panhandler Pies Restaurant and Bakery, Sandpoint, Idaho

“The U.S. Border Patrol warned us to expect a big, Canadian biker gang”, laughed the hostess as our group of BMW club riders crowded into the Panhandler on Canada’s Victoria Day weekend.  Saturday morning, and the compact, rustically decorated Panhandler was packed and bustling.

We ‘discovered’ the Panhandler more than ten years ago on motorcycle trip.  Since then, it’s become a mandatory stop whenever we ride through the picturesque town.

Sandpoint, Idaho is a small town known as a hotbed for various arts and crafts.  We’ve always visited the Panhandler for pies – and there’s a list of different kinds as long as your arm.  I’m a sucker for blueberry and lemon meringue, both of which they always seem to have on hand.  On the main course side, we normally ride through Sandpoint in the morning, so breakfast skillets are always popular.  The skillets are large portion omelets of various kinds.  One of the Panhandler’s specialties is corn bread, which is noticeably lighter and softer than what we normally get served.  Highly recommended.
