Rattlesnake Pass – Asotin, WA to Enterprise, OR

This photo was taken from a roadside pullout somewhere between Mile 3 and Mile 4 on Hwy 3 (the Oregon side) of Rattlesnake Pass.

If you’re a motorcyclist, anything named Rattlesnake Pass is going to grab your attention.

Riding from Canada, we normally start this very technical, supremely twisty road from Asotin, WA.  (Asotin is a just few miles from Lewiston, ID.) The Pass starts as Hwy 129 on the Washington side and climbs steeply from there.   A couple of kilometres of tight, tight road eventually opens up to a geographic plateau and forest.  Watch out for the free range cattle.  On the Oregon side, it becomes Hwy 3 and the road gets snarly again as it drops down to Enterprise, OR.

Rattlesnake Pass is the only road linking Asotin to Enterprise.

Distance:  128 kilometres.  Driving time:  about 2 hours.

This is one of the most sinewy ‘motorcycle’ roads in the Pacific Northwest.  In a car, I’d choose a Mini Cooper S with the John Cooper Works option.  On a motorcycle, it’s simply glorious.
