Sabor Divino Portuguese Restaurant in downtown Edmonton

Sabor Divino Portuguese Restaurant in downtown Edmonton

Our nephew Rick has been working in Cambridge, England, but was home in Alberta for a quick visit last week. A one-day, whirlwind business trip to Edmonton accompanied by his dad,  gave us the perfect excuse for a spur-of-the-moment lunch gathering with our family.

Ingrid suggested Sabor Divino, a Portuguese restaurant downtown in Edmonton’s trendy Boardwalk Building.

We dined there on Monday, typically a slow day in the restaurant business.  Our party of six was seated immediately.  The restaurant has a modern, low key style that’s definitely European.

Sabor Divino is a fine dining establishment, and their lunch menu pricing reflects that.  Despite few customers, our orders seemed a tad slow coming from the kitchen, but we were in no hurry, taking the time to catch up with Rick on how work and life is in Cambridge.

When the food arrived, it was piping hot and everybody said their meals were excellent.  I ordered the Lamb Risotto ($18.00), which was creamy smooth with slivers of lamb throughout and a distinct lamb flavour.  I would have preferred larger pieces of lamb, but the dish was excellent, and I’d have no hesitation ordering it again.  Two of our party ordered Beef Tenderloin lunch specials ($18.00.)  It came with a zucchini and tomato soup, which Ingrid enjoyed, saying she could distinguish clearly the two main ingredients, and the tenderloin, wrapped in bacon and with a red wine reduction, was tender and juicy.  Another two in our party ordered Salmon and Leek Tagliatelle ($15.00), prepared with a cream sauce.  Both said they enjoyed their meals.  We ordered one Leite Crème ($7.00) dessert for the table to share.  It’s a cream custard (like crème caramel) topped with caramelized sugar and cinnamon, but with a slightly softer texture than the French version.  It was delicious.  A draft beer rang in at $7.00 and cappuccinos were $3.50 each.

From the dishes we ordered, I’d easily mistaken Sabor Divino as an Italian rather than Portuguese restaurant, but that’s likely because we didn’t order the more Portuguese-style dishes such as Piri Piri Chicken.  That’s something I intend to do on my next visit.

I really liked Sabor Divino.  Son Chris says it’s his favourite downtown Edmonton restaurant.  Highly recommended.  We’ll be back.
