My Guzzi dealership just called and advised my 2012 Stelvio NTX is not roadworthy.  They’ve essentially ‘grounded’ the bike.

This action is pursuant to the recall notice that Piaggio Group Americas, Inc. issued August 22, 2013, in accordance with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Piaggio Group Americas letter states in part,

“PGA has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in a specific range of Moto Guzzi motorcycles noted below:

In these vehicles, PGA has identified the VIN ranges of Griso 8V, Norge 8V and Stelvio NTX models where the rear suspension double connecting rod does not meet quality standards and a replacement is required.  Failure of this component affects the vehicle’s chassis and can jeopardize the stability of the motorcycle. . .”

The dealership’s service department say they have been notified of one Guzzi affected by this recall where the rear suspension component has failed, but they could not say whether that motorcycle was in Canada, the United States, or elsewhere.

As always, it’s better to err on the side of caution.  We’ll leave the Stelvio at the dealer and wait patiently for the replacement parts to arrive, and update CarAndRider readers as soon as possible.
