The Frugal 5 – Canada’s most fuel-efficient gasoline engine cars for 2013

Everybody gripes about the cost of gasoline the instant prices jump.  If fuel efficiency is your top priority, these are the five most fuel-efficient cars with gasoline engines sold in Canada for 2013, according to Natural Resources Canada’s official government ratings.

Now that most manufacturers have shipped 2014 models, this is the best time of the year to be shopping for a new 2013 model.

(This list excludes hybrids and diesel powered vehicles.)

Make/Model, Engine, Transmission, Fuel Economy L/100 Km city/hwy, est. L/year, MSRP

  1. 2013 Toyota Scion IQ, 1.3 L, CVT automatic, 5.5/4.7, 1020, $17,070
  2. 2013 Fiat 500, 1.4 L, 5-spd manual, 6.4/4.9, 1140, $13,495
  3. 2013 Chevrolet Spark, 1.2 L, 5-spd manual, 6.3/5.1, 1160, $11,845
  4. 2013Fiat 500 Cabriolet, 1.4 L, 5-spd manual, 6.7/5.2, 1200, $16,495
  5. 2013 Ford Fiesta SFE, 1.6 L, 6-spd automatic, 6.9/4.9, 1200, $13,999

Benchmark

Our benchmark is the 2013 Honda Civic, regularly the bestselling passenger car in Canada.  The Civic is classified as a ‘compact’ sedan and larger than the Frugal Five shown above, all of which are subcompacts.

It’s interesting to note the Civic virtually matches the subcompacts in highway fuel economy, largely I surmise due to superior aerodynamics and where heavier weight plays an insignificant role in affecting fuel use at cruising speed.

Our picks

The most fun car to drive is the Fiat 500, and it’s a much better choice as a city car than, say, the Smart Car or any hybrid.  For the cash-strapped buyer, the $11,845 dollar Chevrolet Spark with 5-speed manual transmission is the bargain hunter’s choice.  If you must have an automatic transmission, the Ford Fiesta is your top pick.
