Famoso Neopolitan Pizzeria, Whyte Avenue, Edmonton

Famoso Neopolitan Pizzeria specializes in thin crust pizza.  Sure, it’s a restaurant chain, something I normally avoid, but the Whyte Avenue location was very close to the venue for a Friday night Christmas concert and that convenience drew us in.

The advantage of thin crust pizza is rapid cook time.  I’ve timed the Jasper Avenue outlet’s efficacy on a previous visit.  From the time to placing one’s order at the counter to the time the server delivered it to our table was an impressively short 10 minutes flat.  THAT’S fast food.

Our Friday night visit had us in the restaurant at 5:45 PM, before the supper rush started.  Serve staff were plentiful, helpful and proficient.

We ordered a Capricciosa pizza ($14.75) garnished with Italian ham, roasted mushrooms, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, extra virgin olive oil, and pecorino romano cheese, and Sweet BBQ Chicken pizza ($14.75) with honey smoked BBQ sauce, fior-de-latte, fire roasted chicken, smoked mozzarella, diced tomatoes, red onions and cilantro.

Two chai lattes ($4.75 each) were the hot beverages we asked for to warm us on this -20 C wintery night.  When the hot drinks arrived,  they were lukewarm and we sent them back to be re-heated.  Ingrid speculated that the coffee mugs’ storage location on shelves against the restaurant’s outside (cold) walls was the cause of our drinks being cold.  The drinks were returned after a few minutes much warmer, but not piping hot.

The Capricciosa pizza was the favourite of the two.  The thin slices of Italian ham, saltiness of the olives nicely balanced the tang of the artichoke hearts and cheese.  The BBQ Chicken pizza was less to our taste.  The BBQ sauce being too sweet for my liking, tasting more like ketchup.

For fans of thin crust pizza, Famoso is reliable and the food comes to the table quickly – a big draw if you’re in a hurry.

Famoso has three locations in Edmonton – on trendy Whyte Avenue near the University of Alberta where we dined, downtown on Jasper Avenue, and in the north on St. Albert Trail.
