New Dynasty Restaurant, Calgary

We like New Dynasty restaurant for its Chinese lunch buffet.  It’s located waaay up in the northwest suburbs of Calgary in a neighbourhood mall at John Laurie Boulevard and Nose Hill Drive.

My octogenarian Chinese relatives love this place, which is telling.  They all grew up on a strict diet of traditional Chinese home cooking, they seldom go to restaurants, and they have a tendency to stick to the food they know, which is Chinese food.  So for them to like this restaurant is high praise indeed.

New Dynasty Restaurant offers what I consider the ‘normal fare’ when it comes to Chinese lunch buffets.  There’s your obligatory won ton soup, various noodle dishes (fat, soft, chow mein noodles with mixed vegetables and meat in an oyster sauce base; thin, curry flavoured noodles with bits of shrimp and vegetables), ginger beef, sweet and sour pork, beef and broccoli, crispy spring rolls, fried rice – you get the idea.  Pretty standard stuff.  But the one dish my relatives love is the surprisingly large and plump breaded deep fried chicken wings.  The old folks shuffle back to the steam tables with remarkable speed when a new batch of wings comes out of the kitchen.

There’s also the usual assortment of desserts, but this is generally a weakness in Chinese restaurants, especially if you’re used to western dessert.  You won’t find Sacher Torte or Crème Brulee, but the cold tapioca soup is a family favourite.

Best of all, the lunch buffet is very well-priced, at $10.95 per person and is a terrific value.

New Dynasty Restaurant’s website says they’ve won the Calgary Herald newspaper’s Readers Choice award in the Chinese Restaurant category two years running.
