Ho Won Restaurant, Calgary

Good restaurants may come and go, but few have the rock solid, steadfast longevity as Chinese restaurants like Ho Won in Calgary.  As I’ve written before, it’s one of my all time favourites.

Dinner at Ho Won with Ingrid, Dad and my sister time-warped me back to our childhood.  The Cantonese Style Chow Mein ($8.50) with slices of BBQ pork, shrimp, squid, Chinese mushrooms on a bed of crispy egg noodles, slowly softened by the dish’s sauce, is always a favourite.  Salt and Pepper Fried Squid ($11.95) is one of Ho Won’s signature dishes, and looking around the crowded restaurant, it looked like every table had ordered this slightly spicy plate.  An order of Ginger Fried Shredded Beef ($11.95) was another favourite, and finally  an order of Three Kinds of Mushroom and Mixed Vegetables provided the greenery.

Order a side of steamed rice and pot of tea for the table, and, as my sister says, “This is pure, Chinese comfort food.”  Amen, sister.
