The Curry Bowl restaurant offers a curious (and appealing) blend of Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese and Thai dishes.  The restaurant’s bumpf describes its offerings as ‘enlightened Asian cuisine’, and this small eatery came recommended  during a Victoria Day long weekend trip by motorcycle travel companions Louise and Denis.

Easy to find, it’s located right on Highway 3 in the small town of Fernie, B.C.  The restaurant is small, and dining is casual.

On the Victoria Day Monday evening we were there, the staff accommodated our large-ish motorcycle touring group of nine quickly and efficiently.

A few plates of appetizers were ordered for the table, including Papadams (delicious deep fried chick pea chips served with a slightly spicy mango dip, $3.95) and Samosas (2 for $7.95.)  I’m not well versed in Indian cuisine, but the samosas I’ve eaten have been large, triangles of deep fried pastry stuffed with potatoes, onion and curry.  The samosas that arrived were small pieces of pastry with a curry filling, but nothing like we have eaten before, and the size of the appetizer was disappointing.

I ordered the Mango Shrimp Curry ($14.50) for my main course, offered with white or brown rice.  I’m a traditionalist and ordered the white (steamed) rice with ‘medium’ heat.  When the dish arrived, the curry was served in a metal bowl, making it look like a bowl of soup, placed on the plate beside a scoop-formed mound of white rice.  I ladled the curry over the rice, while some of my companions spooned the rice into the bowl of curry.

The flavour was excellent, with enough curry and heat to slightly buzz my tongue, with nice slivers of mango in the mix.  The shrimp were small, but identifiable, and I would have liked more than the three or so shrimp that were in my order.

To be sure, the Mango Curry Shrimp was tasty, and I wouldn’t hesitate in returning to this eatery.  Others in our group said they enjoyed their Pad Thai and various other curry dishes.  I’d return to The Curry Bowl without hesitation.
