I’m a self-proclaimed fuel economy geek.

Most riders don’t care about the fuel usage of their motorcycles, but I do.  Part of my interest comes from how I grew up.  My Dad was (and continues to) religiously record fuel use and calculate fuel consumption.  Also, as an automotive and motorcycle writer, it’s part of my make up to be curious about these things.

I’ve just returned from a five day, 3050 kilometre circuit from Edmonton to Cranbrook, B.C., Walla Walla, WA, Missoula, MT, Fernie, BC and back to Edmonton.

Here are the hard numbers:

2012 Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX (currently showing 24,500 km on the odometer)

  • Edmonton, AB to Cochrane, AB:  343 km, 22.547 L premium fuel @ $1.379/L = 6.6 L/100 km, 42.8 miles per Imperial gallon, 35.6 miles per U.S. gallon
  • Cochrane, AB to Cranbrook, BC:  378 km, 21.055 L premium fuel @$1.569/L= 5.6 L/100 km, 50.4 miles per Imperial gallon, 42.0 miles per U.S. gallon

Edmonton to Cranbrook average:  721 km, 43.602 L premium fuel = 6.04 L/100 km, 46.7 miles per Imperial gallon, 38.9 miles per U.S. gallon
