There’s nothing worse than peering through a scratched faceshield.  This is my fourth riding season with my Nolan N90 modular helmet.

Early this season, I replaced the retractable sunshade due to scratches caused by rubbing when retracting or lowering it.  Apparently, some Nolan N90s are prone to this design defect; others are not.

Scratches in anything that’s supposed to be optically clear is a pain, especially when riding into the sun.  The scratches scatter the incoming light and optical clarity is degraded; not a good thing.

During my Victoria Day long weekend tour to Oregon, I made the mistake of stuffing my rain gloves into my helmet to carry into a restaurant, and of course, the metal clips on the gloves gouged the inside of the clear faceshield.  I kicked myself for that rookie mistake.  I’m fastidious about being careful with my helmets, and take great care to clean the faceshield with soap and clean water before doing a final touch up with Plexus plastic cleaner and polish.

I ordered a new replacement faceshield from Canada’s Motorcycle in Quebec via their online store.  There is no longer a Canadian distributor for Nolan helmets, so it’s terrific that Canada’s Motorcycle seems to have inventory.  Replacement faceshields and retractable sunshades for Nolan helmets were not available from motorcycle stores n Calgary or Edmonton that previously carried the Italian helmet line.

The Nolan N90 replacement clear faceshield from Canada’s Motorcycle was $C43.15 (+ GST, + $C7.00 shipping via Canada Post; the tinted retractable sunshade was $C39.91 (+GST, + $C7.00 shipping via Canada Post. I could have gotten free shipping had I ordered both ‘shields at the same time.)

Replacing the two visors (about $102) wasn’t cheap, but worth the money.  By taking care to minimize scratches in future use, they should allow me to wear the N90 for another couple of years.
