Yokozuna Japanese Restaurant, Edmonton, AB

IMG_1331 (1024x768)Japanese cuisine is something our household enjoys immensely, but I have to admit, I’m not very knowledgeable of the bewildering array of dishes to choose.

Our friends Richard and Maggie have been loyal Yokozuna customers for more than a decade and introduced us to this family run restaurant near Edmonton’s Southgate Mall.

“If you ever want the best bento boxes in the city, go to Yokozuna”, Richard urged.

Ingrid and I finally ventured there on our own for lunch one day, and we ended up ordering the lunch size Bento boxes – large plastic trays with compartments to separate the cold salad from the hot rice, soya and wasabi dipping sauce, tempura (the lightly battered and deep fried pieces) and a compartment for the rolls/sushi/sashimi.

Our bento boxes came with a miso ‘soup’, a light, clear broth, which wasn’t overly salty as some are.  The flavour is savory and slightly earthy, and a nice starter to trigger one’s appetite.

I ordered the Tonkatsu bento box ($13.50) with features breaded pork on a bed of rice with a couple of rice rolls, sushi (fish on rice, cold as it’s supposed to be), tempura (lightly breaded and deep fried carrot, yam and shrimp) and a cold salad dressed with a delicious sesame vinaigrette.

This was a very hearty lunch, and among the largest lunch bento boxes I’ve had.  It was excellent and highly recommended.

Ingrid ordered the beef bento box with sashimi ($13.50).  Her lunch featured a teriyaki (sweet soya sauce-based flavouring) on rice with sashimi (raw, thinly sliced fresh fish) and the same side dishes of tempura and salad.  Green tea for two was $2.00, and an appropriate accompaniment for the cuisine.

Lunch was terrific.  The hot food was hot, the cold food was cold, and we remarked that EACH individual compartment of food was excellent in its own right.
