Mr. Guo’s Cafe, Calgary, AB

In Calgary's northwest suburbs,

In Calgary’s northwest suburbs, this Chinese restaurant serves us some delectable dishes such as the highly recommended Tea Smoked Duck

Mr. Guo’s (pronounced GWOH’S) Cafe is not you run-of-the-mill family run Chinese restaurant.

Don’t be put off by the numerous typographic errors in the menu, clearly written by folks whose first language is something other than English.  The proprietors have cleverly printed their menu with plenty of colour photographs, and that helps one wade through the long list of delectable and unfamiliar dishes.

The innocuous little restaurant is tucked away in a plaza in Crowfoot Crossing.  The restaurant is small, tidy and modern.

Our Calgary relatives live nearby and had recommended this eatery, which they say had only recently opened.

Their menu says Eastern Cuisine, Szechuan Cuisine, Guangdong Cuisine, Hunan Cuisine.

Highly recommended dishes:

  • E03, Tea Smoked Duck
  • G08, Ribs in Hot Pot
  • N5, Stir Fried Lamb with Cumin
  • C01, Pan Fried Onion Cake

The other dishes we ordered were N05 (Fried Crispy Noodle and Seafood, aka Cantonese Chow Mein) and J6 (Mixed Mushroom with Baby Bok Choi.)  These were good, but not outstanding as were the dishes recommended above.

The 'standard' Cantonese Chow Mein is always a personal favourite, but was eclipsed by other 'highly recommended' offerings
