At 18,611 km, our RT’s low beam (‘dip’ beam to our UK friends) H7 halogen bulb fails.  It lights up the section between the RT’s two, circular LED daytime running light ‘eyes’

I returned from the BMW MOA National Rally in Billings, MT on Monday.

Of course, we took the Long Way ‘Round, riding from Edmonton to Cranbrook, BC then on to Helena, MT and finally Billings.  The tour was yet another memorable trip through BC and into Montana.  Our round trip was nearly 3,000 km.

I invariably fill up the bike at the end of a long trip so the bike is fueled and ready to go at a moment’s notice.  As I rolled out of the Esso near my home, the little “!” warning light popped up on the RT’s dash.

Uh oh.  I guessed it might be a burned out light bulb and I was right.  when I got home I could see he H7 halogen low beam bulb that lights up the section between the RT’s two circular LED daytime running light ‘eyes’ was out.

I don’t know if this even qualifies as a ‘failure’, or is it simply normal wear and tear?

The H7 bulb had 18,611 km on it when it failed.  I don’t know why bulbs seem to fail so quickly on motorcycles.  I imagine motorcycles vibrate more than cars, and therefore motorcycle bulbs are subjected to more destructive forces than cars.

In the two years I owned my 2012 Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX, the Italian V-twin went through two front signal light bulbs, one taillight bulb and one fog light bulb.

Now, I’m on the hunt for a suitable H7 halogen replacement, and there are a myriad of options available, ranging from ‘standard’ H7s, ‘Long Life’ bulbs and the so-called ‘high output’ bulbs labeled “+50”, “+60” (supposedly meaning 50- or 60-percent ‘brighter’ than standard bulbs.)
