Pulled pork and coleslaw in a cup – German style

Pulled pork in a cup from street vendor in Frankfurt, Germany

We landed in Frankfurt, Germany on the last day of the national celebration for the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s ‘fall.’

Along the Main River that runs through the city, numerous street vendors were set up, selling food and beverages, as well as displays to promote tourism in various regions of Germany.

We bought this cup of pulled pork, topped with coleslaw.  Brother-in-law John asked for a piece of bread to go with his order.  The pulled pork didn’t come with bread, but the woman behind the counter stuck a chunk of bread on his cup, not mine.  I guess she liked John’s inherited Teutonic appearance.

The pulled pork and coleslaw was a tasty (and unusual because it was served in a cup) introduction to German cuisine.  Interestingly, we were told to return the used plastic cup and fork back to the vendor for a 1 Euro refund; apparently, that refund is part of the city’s program to encourage recycling.
