BMW Nav V GPS – a timely tip for winter storage

BMW Navigator V GPS - cold weather storage tip: take it indoors

BMW Navigator V GPS – cold weather storage tip: take it indoors

Even though Winter hasn’t officially arrived, here in Edmonton winter temperatures ARE here.

My BMW riding friends reminded me this weekend that BMW’s Navigator V GPS has a  specific range of temperatures in which it is intended to operate.

According to one BMW official site the Navigator V is intended to operate within a temperature range of -20 C to +55 C (-4 F to +131 F).  But it’s the Nav V’s battery that is of concern, especially to those who may store their motorcycles outside or, as in my case, a partially heated attached garage.  BMW states that the Nav V’s battery charging temperature range is 0 C to +45 C (32 F to 113 F).

So, we ought to err on the side of caution.  If you leave your Nav V GPS attached to your bike (as I always do) and it is subject to ambient temperatures of less than 0 C, then take your GPS off the bike and store it indoors.

With my R1200RT parked inside an attached garage, it’s one of those ‘tips’ I hadn’t thought of.  Nice to know.
