I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for the next, ‘greatest’ bike, one that could possibly occupy space in my garage.

I recently found this massive 9-bike adventure-tourer shootout, posted by online bike magazine Motorcycle.com, and included in this test are two bikes that have recently piqued my interest:  the Kawasaki Versys 100LT and Aprilia Caponord 1200.

In this multi-part test, the editors test 9 of the most popular 2015 A-T open class bikes:

  • Aprilia Caponord 1200
  • BMW S1000XR
  • BMW R1200GS
  • Ducati Multistrada 1200S
  • Kawasaki Versys 1000LT
  • KTM 1190 Adventure
  • KTM 1290 Super Adventure
  • Suzuki V-Strom 1000
  • Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200

Notably absent is Yamaha’s Super Tenere 1200 (a demo unit wasn’t available at the time of testing, say the editors) and the Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX 1200 (which the editors failed to even mention.)

The editors’ conclusions are surprising.  The ‘winner’ is BMW’s new S1000XR, beating out the KTM 1290 Super Adventure and Ducati Multistrada 1200S by only fractions of a percentage point.  (The editors fail to mention the 0.9-percent separating 1st place BMW from 3rd place Ducati may be statistically insignificant, and for all intents and purposes, it was a 3-way tie for 1st place.)

But the editors do say correctly there are no ‘losers’ in this test.  Depending on your priorities (price, percentage of pavement vs dirt, ergonomics for the size of the rider, ‘tourability’ vs sporting prowess), each of these bikes is perfect for somebody.
