Highlights – Cosmos Vacation’s Central Europe bus tour

IMG_0862Our Cosmos Vacations 14-day bus tour last fall took us through Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria.

Here’s what we thought were the “Best” and “Worst” of our tour:

In no particular order:

Best cities and sights

  • Frankfurt, Germany (beautiful old town and shopping)
  • Berlin, Germany (old Iron Curtain wall, slick, modern city; high end shopping)
  • Poznan, Poland (ancient architecture, superb Polish cuisine)
  • Krakow, Poland (beautifully preserved medieval architecture)
  • Wieliczka Salt Mines (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Prague, Czech Republic (beautiful architecture, shopping for crystal)
  • Vienna, Austria (stunning architecture; desserts)
  • Auschwitz concentration camp (haunting and historical)
  • Germany’s Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road), Nordlingen and Rothenburg, 350 km in southern Germany linking historic, medieval walled towns

Disappointing cities

  • Warsaw, Poland (drab and dense with communist-era ‘architecture’)
  • Budapest, Hungary (former WW II damaged buildings have been patched up and lost their ‘character’)
  • Munich, Germany (where our tourist hotel was located, the environment was dirty; middle-Eastern restaurants galore, but German fare was impossible to find)
