I’ve been looking for a helmet bag for some time.  I’m fastidious when it comes to taking care of my helmet.  I always use great care to ensure I handle it carefully, protecting it from knocks and bangs when I’m carrying it.

Helmet bags are a good idea when you need to transport your helmet off the bike, like when getting dropped off at the dealer to pick up your bike.  To me, it’s worrisome rounding a corner in the car then hearing your helmet go ‘clunk’ as it rolls in the trunk or slides off the car’s seat.

A couple of months ago, I spotted this BMW helmet bag in my local BMW dealer’s big apparel sale when they were trying to clear out last year’s BMW riding apparel.  It’s a handsome bag, I thought, and at the then retail price of $62.50, I tucked it away in the back of my mind, contemplating if it was worth that to me.

Earlier this week I popped into the dealer to check out the fit of Schuberth helmets to my hard-to-fit ’round-oval’ head.  Regular CarAndRider readers will know my purchase of a new Nolan N91 flip-up modular helmet came to an unhappy end when the latching mechanism failed when I put the helmet on my fat head.

I asked the accessories clerk if they had the BMW bag I had seen, and she happily went to the storeroom and pulled out the Helmet Bag 2.  “This is the last one”, she said, “and it’s ‘final sale.”  The regular price had been reduced to an attractive $43.00.  I love buying things on sale, so I grabbed it.

Construction

This BMW helmet bag is an attractive black/silver/grey.  If there’s one thing I like about BMW accessories, it’s that they almost always have great style.

There wasn’t any paperwork with the helmet bag, but it appears to be very well made.  It has a semi-rigid (likely foam lined) construction so it holds its shape when empty.  There is a non-slip, one-piece moulded rubber-like base that extends up the side of the bag a couple of inches.  It appears you could place the bag in more than an inch of water and the rubber base would keep water from leaking through the bottom.

In fact, the accessory department clerks all commented that the helmet bag “looked” waterproof/water resistant, because the two-way zipper seals like a gasket.  Again, there is no literature to confirm the bag is waterproof.  But another hint that it might be is the bag looks like it was intended to be carried on a bike if one wished.

The Helmet Bag 2 comes with an accessory (removable) shoulder strap and a handy 9″ x 7-1/4″ zippered side pocket, useful for carrying the shoulder strap and say, a pair of gloves.

Dimensions

The base measure 14-1/2″ long x 10″ wide.  It’s about 11-1/4″ tall.

Use

The (foam-?) reinforced sides makes opening the Helmet Bag 2 a little cumbersome.  You have to squish one side down to make the opening large enough to slide the helmet in.  But the helmet fits with room to spare, so those wearing XXL helmets with large outer shells shouldn’t have any problems.  Two textile straps are the carrying handles; I expected a snap or sleeve to hold the straps together, but there isn’t one.

All in all, I’m pleased.
