Superb Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce

Superb Maple Bourbon Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce served bubbling hot in a skillet

I love BBQ, and on my travels, it’s one of the first types of restaurant I look for.

Right here in Edmonton, there’s a fine BBQ eatery, Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus.  (That’s no typo.  I’m no fan of intentionally misspelled words for the sake of being ‘cute’.  But we’re here to talk good food, not correct spelling.)

Sloppy Hoggs is located on 118th Avenue just east of 97th Street in Edmonton’s east central side.  It’s comfortably casual; you can show up in jeans and a t-shirt and feel right at home.  And there’s plenty of parking right in front of the eatery and on the adjacent side street.

I’ve eaten at Sloppy Hoggs before, but on that occasion, I wasn’t particularly impressed with my lunch.  I don’t even recall what I had.

This dining experience was entirely different, and our meal was hearty and satisfied my craving for smoky, barbecued meat.

We were there for supper, and on our server’s recommendation (she said it was her personal favourite), we ordered the Sliced Brisket Plate ($19.95.)  It comes with a choice of 3 ‘sides’, and we chose corn bread, coleslaw an potato salad.

The serving of sliced brisket was enormous, and Ingrid and I split it.  The beef brisket was cut in thick slices and topped with a rich, dark BBQ sauce.  The brisket was tender, juicy and with a noticeable dark, smoke-flavoured ‘bark’ edge on each slice of brisket.  We loved it.

Despite trying to be ‘good’ about our current eating habits, we succumbed to ordering dessert, the Maple Bourbon Bread Pudding ($9.00.)  It arrived in a skillet with the maple bourbon sauce bubbling hot.  The heavy, dense with egg bread pudding suited my taste.  Interestingly, the sauce wasn’t cloyingly sweet, and it proved to be a nice finish to a very enjoyable evening.

 Highly recommended.
