Car and Motorcycle Touch Up Paint

Touch up paint to match the colour of OEM wheels on our 2015 Subaru WRX

We brushed a curb with the wheels of our 2015 Subaru WRX.

Aaaargh!  For obsessive-compulsive car owners (you know who you are), a ‘bruised’ alloy wheel is simply a sign that screams, “INCOMPETENT DRIVER!!”

No problem, I thought.  I’ll just call my local Subaru dealer and buy some touch up paint.

“Nope.  Subaru doesn’t have touch up paint for wheels”, explains the parts guy at the other end of the phone.

“OK, give me a paint code”, I say.

“Nope.  Subaru doesn’t have a paint code for wheels”, says the parts guy.  And apparently, Subaru isn’t the only auto manufacturer that DOES NOT have paint codes for OEM wheels.  “I worked at Chrysler for years.  Chrysler also did not have paint codes for their wheels”, explained the parts guy.

What’s a guy to do?

My good friend Rick Y. recommended I contact CanadaCarColor Inc., a paint and auto body supplier.  I drove the WRX over to their west end shop and Patrick Downey helped me out.

He grabbed three large rings of OEM auto paint swatches and under an overcast sky, carefully compared the metalflake grey-black paint until he found a match.

“This paint has a touch of blue in it”, he observed.

“Sure”, I said, “I’m colour blind.  I trust whatever you say.”

It turns out the WRX’s wheel colour is a close match to a Kia automotive colour.

Downey mixed up a small bottle of paint for me.  It’s about the size of a prescription pill bottle and it has an applicator brush built into the cap.

The small bottle of paint cost $14 dollars – a small price to pay when some wheel repair specialty shops in town charge $250 dollars per wheel to repair curb rash and repaint the wheel.

Motorcycles, too

For those of us who MUST have pristine motorcycles, using CanadaCarColor to match the paint on a bike is faster and easier than mail-ordering paint pens from U.S. companies such as ColorRite.

Rick, who had recommended this company, had a Ducati with a nick on its red frame.  Of course, Ducati doesn’t have touch up paint for their frames, and CanadaCarColor matched the paint.
