We’re just starting our second winter in our new to us house.  Like many old(er) homes (ours was built in 1986), the slope of the garage floor isn’t perfect.

Water and snow melt pools slightly at the right entrance corner of the garage.  What to do?

My neat freak buddy, Rick, recommended the Canadian made Tapson Garage Mat.

I bought it online.  The Tapson Garage Mat comes in two sizes.  One for cars (7’4″ x 18’4″) and one for trucks (7’4″ x 21’4″.)  The online price is $249.95 Cdn (plus GST and Fedex shipping.)

The garage mat arrived in a box, and it was surprisingly light weight.

Construction

The mat is made of a heavy duty material; it appears to be tear resistant as there is a woven synthetic fabric embedded in the tarp-like material.

The garage mat has a tube shaped foam edge which ‘dams’ drippings from the vehicle.  Each corner of the mat has a 90-degree plastic corner piece that is screwed together and joins the foam tube edging.  Tapson claims these plastic corners can be driven over, but it isn’t recommended.

When laid out on the garage floor, the garage mat (at 18’4″) was too long to fit our short garage stall.

I used a utility knife and removed a 27-1/4″ section from the length and carefully re-attached the two pieces together with 5 layers of duct tape.

Rick says his garage mat is now 10 or 11 years old and needs to be replaced.  The gravel that sticks to the car’s tires eventually punctures holes in the mat.

If I can get 10 years’ use out of this mat, I’ll be happy.

I’ll even be happier that the garage floor stays dry and clean.

The Tapson Garage Mat comes with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.
