Last weekend we had the opportunity to take our first highway trip in our 2018 Audi A4 2.0 TSI Quattro.

The A4 exceeded our expectations on the highway.  As befitting a premium compact sport sedan, the car cabin was luxuriously quiet with zero wind noise, and even fitted with Dunlop Sport Winter 4D tires, road noise was imperceptible.

What I really was keen to find out was the new car’s fuel economy.

Best highway fuel mileage, 6.18 l/100 km (45.7 Imp mpg, 38.1 US mpg)

Calgary to Edmonton, cruising at 120 kph (except for 80 kph construction zone at Red Deer), air temperature ranged from -2.5 to +2.5 degrees Celsius, dry roads, light traffic.  283 km driven, 17.491 l Esso premium unleaded used.

Worst highway fuel mileage, 6.87 l/100 km (41.1 Imp mpg, 34.2 US mpg)

Edmonton to Calgary, cruising at 120 kph (except for 80 kph construction zone at Red Deer), air temperature ranged from -1.5 to 3.5 degrees Celsius), dry roads, light traffic.  308 km driven, 21.158 l Esso premium unleaded used.

Why does fuel economy matter?

Tracking fuel economy:

  • Helps me monitor in real time the car’s overall mechanical soundness and ‘wellbeing’
  • Allows me to estimate the car’s operating cost (especially for a trip involving highway travel to a destination)
  • Gives me bragging rights
