Canadians love to complain about the high cost of consumer goods we pay compared to the price of the same items in the United States.

Cross border shopping – visiting the U.S. to buy certain goods – is nearly a national sport.

As an interesting exercise, we decided to cross-shop a short list of motorcycles that currently at the top of the “Hmmm, I Wonder Which Bike I Should Buy Next” list.

The list is eclectic, and include some new Triumphs (T120 Bonneville and Street Scrambler), acquiring a new (2017) Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX to replace the 2012 I sold and now regret, new BMWs (R1200RT and R1200GSA), and a couple of Kawasakis such as the gorgeous new Z900RS retro bike.

Unexpected, but true, Canadian prices are lower than U.S. prices across the board

It surprized me to discover that in every single case, the Canadian manufacturer’s suggested retail price was lower in Canada than in the U.S.  Note that when we converted U.S. dollars to Canadian, the exchange rate was $1.00 USD = $1.284 Cdn.  Also, MSRPs in Canada and the U.S. do not include shipping, PDI (pre-delivery inspection) or applicable sales taxes.

The biggest price differentials were for the 2017 Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX (there is no 2018 model) which was 17.9-percent lower in Canada than the U.S. and the 2018 Triumph Bonneville T120 which has a 15.0-percent lower MSRP in Canada than the U.S.

So don’t complain about Canadian MSRPs.  Go out and buy a new bike!
