Winter.  Blah!  For we winter bound motorcyclists, winter is hell.

Since we’re already ‘saddled up’ on our sofas for winter, we might as well make the best of our time living vicariously, and if that means experiencing motorcycling via the TV, so be it.

I’ve just ‘discovered’ The Motorbike Show on Netflix.

Produced in the U.K. and hosted by Henry Cole, The Motorbike Show delves into parts of motorcycling that directly appeal to me:  restoring old motorcycles (in Episode 1 Cole begins the restoration of a Honda CB550), visiting important motorcycle venues (such as the Isle of Man aboard a new Norton 961 Commando), learning the art of trials riding (he refurbishes an old Yamaha TY 175 trials bike and takes riding lessons from multiple World Trials Champion Dougie Lampkin), and visiting motorcycle museums.

Another benefit for armchair world travelers is the production showcases motorcycle riding on the lush, scenic roads of the U.K., which further adds to enjoying the show.

With long, disheveled hair, at first glance Cole appears to be yet another TV personality biker ‘wannabe’, but a few minutes of viewing proves otherwise.  Cole is a hard core motorcycle enthusiast.  Although his onscreen personality is all ‘very British’, i.e. reserved and gentile, his passion for motorcycles and the sport is obvious.

There are currently 10 episodes of The Motorbike Show (Season 1, 2011) available for viewing on Netflix.  Highly recommended.
