Churros ($2.95), Is there anything better than fried dough for dessert?

Last weekend we had the pleasure of trying a new restaurant, La Patrona, a Mexican restaurant that brands itself as a purveyor of ‘authentic Mexican cuisine.’

Our reservation for 4 had been made mid-week, and the earliest sitting we could book was 7:30 pm Saturday.  When we arrived, the small restaurant was jammed full and a crowd of customers were standing at the front counter awaiting the 7:30 pm time slot.

We patiently waited about 15 minutes, with our server explaining the restaurant had an unusual number of large bookings prior to our arrival, and the groups were slow in departing.  No worries.

La Patrona is located in a strip mall in Sherwood Park.  That makes the exterior face of the restaurant understated and a place you’d easily walk or drive past.  That would be a mistake.

La Patrona serves up some of the best Mexican food we’ve had.  The couple sitting at the table beside us said they were regular vacationers to Mexico, and La Patrona’s food was as good as anything they’d enjoyed in Mexico.

Torta Cochinita ($15.00)

For starters, our friends ordered a plate of nachos with Chorizo sausage as an extra topping. Unlike the ‘normal’ nachos I’ve had in Mexican restaurants, La Patrona’s nachos are thick slices, all topped with melted cheese, sour cream, sausage, onions and peppers.  These are THE BEST nachos I’ve eaten.

Ingrid ordered the Torta Cochinita, a sandwich with braised pork shoulder, banana leaves, orange marinade, pickled purple onions and peppers.  It was superb!

Enchiladas de Pollo ($18.00)

With a late-ish dinner hour, I was hungry and wanted something that would stick to my ribs.  I ordered the Enchiladas de Pollo ($18.00).  It’s presentation was not what I had expected.  I’m used to enchiladas of substantial size, but my dish came as 4 small Chinese Spring Roll-sized wraps smothered in tomato sauce, sour cream and various fresh herbs.  Again, excellent!

House Beans ($5.00)

Our final dish was an ‘add on’, the House Beans ($5.00.)  I’m not a big fan of beans, but we thought we’d try the dish anyway.  Ingrid and I each ate a few spoons of the dish but didn’t finish it.  We noticed our companions did the same.  So, unless you have a real hankering for beans, I’d pass on this one.

Even though

Overall, we enjoyed La Patrona immensely.  The food was excellent.  Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and tended to us balancing perfectly checking up on us without intruding or hovering.

Highly recommended.  We’ll be back for sure.
