Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer – product review

Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer

Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer

I’m a little obsessive-compulsive about how my bikes look.  I want them in as near perfect condition, with the proviso that I ride my bikes, and they are definitely not in the Garage Queen class of revered objects of art.

My 2014 BMW R1200RT was beginning to show some aging.  Even though the RT is always kept in an attached garage out of the elements when I’m not riding, the black plastic trim on the panniers and topcase were starting to show that dreaded, grey, almost powdery, faded look that seems to come from exposure to the sun.  I hate that.

Some products can be applied to ‘brighten’ the faded plastic, but many of these leave a greasy, slick residue, which is unattractive to my eyes.

I recently found online discussion on how to bring faded plastic trim back to like new condition, and read some glowing reviews of Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer.

It didn’t take me long to find that local detailing specialist, Auto Obsessed carried the product, which is sold in 1-oz. bottles.

The Product and Applying It

The manufacturer claims Solution Finish is NOT a dye, but it is a jet black liquid, and nitrile gloves are recommended when applying the product.

  1.  Clean the surface

I used a bucket of water with a small squeeze of Sunlight dish washing liquid and followed up with a spray of Formula 409 (10 parts water: 1 part detergent concentrate) and scrubbed the surface with a soft nylon brush.  Then I wiped the surface clean with fresh water and dried with a cloth.

2.  I used a disposable J-cloth to apply the product.  Instructions say to use sparingly.  I placed the folded J-cloth on the top of the bottle and tipped it to give me 3 ‘dots’ of the liquid, then wiped it over the entire surface to be treated.

3.  Wipe the excess treatment with a clean, dry cloth.  There is no need to wait for the product to dry.  Use a cloth you are willing to throw out, because it gets stained with the black product.

That’s it!  Easy peasy.

The folks at Auto Obsessed say their customers say the product lasts about 1 year before requiring another treatment.

The only kicker is that the 1 oz. bottle of Solution Finish Black Trim Restorer is expensive, $19.00 Cdn.  But in my books, it’s worth every cent.
