Rockin’ Robyn’s Diner, Edmonton, AB

Friday Special:  Fish ‘n Chips, battered cod with coleslaw and fries ($13)

Close your eyes and think ‘diner.’

What image comes to mind?  For me, my mind ‘sees’ an old-fashioned long counter with round, padded, chrome stools, the walls lined with dining booths, and maybe a few nick-nacks like old photos and a few old time ‘interesting’ pieces of ancient equipment parts retrieved from some farmer’s barn.

That’s kind of the decor at Rockin’ Robyn’s, a fine little eatery located in Edmonton’s West End.  But Rockin’ Robyn’s is more than that simple diner image; it’s Americana diner-decor on steroids.  The diner’s walls are literally covered with of old photos, car paraphernalia, hollywood glamour – everything you need to remind you of the (North) America our parents and grandparents lived through.  And there’s even stuff to tickle the pleasure centres of Baby Boomers.

All that may be of great interest to those who need to be entertained by their eating environment; others may consider the decor to rate high on the kitsch scale.

But we’re here for the food.

Our foody buddy Richard invited us to join him and another moto friend, Bruno, for Friday lunch, where the daily special was Fish ‘n Chips (battered cod with coleslaw and fries, $13.)  We jumped at the chance, and Ingrid ordered that and I followed Richard’s excellent suggestion and ordered the Taco Salad.

Taco Salad ($12.75)

Vanilla malt. I HAD to!

I have to admit, I’m not a ‘salad guy.’  But Richard raved about it, and I was not disappointed.

The salad came beautifully layered with lettuce, slivered taco chips, salsa, and a very, very generous serving of perfectly taco spiced seasoning and salsa.  It was too much for me to finish, so I took leftovers home and it was enough for Ingrid’s lunch the next day.

Homemade lemon meringue pie

We had also been told Rockin’ Robyn’s homemade pies makes it a destination diner.

At the end of our lunch, we didn’t have room for pie, but Bruno was able to shame us all by ordering Lemon Meringue pie.  Perfect.

I’d been to Rockin’ Robyn’s Diner for breakfast some time ago, and enjoyed it.  Lunch was terrific.  We’ll be back.
